ADSL Notspots register

Document Actions
We are increasingly concerned by the growing number of emails from businesses and citizens unable to get an ADSL connection.

ABC has decided to set up the first independent national database of ADSL notspots. We intend to map all those who cannot, at the end of 2005, get broadband. This register is being created in conjunction with the Community Broadband Network and Avanti Broadband.

Is that you?? Complete the survey now - it takes 2mins

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=608791483070

Are YOU in one of those places and premises who

  • are unable to get an ADSL broadband connection according to the broadband checkers for postcode and phone number
  • have been unable to get connected even once their exchange is ADSL enabled
  • have been unable to get the broadband connection of their choice
  • are reporting that their exchange is 'at capacity' and hence no more ADSL connections are available

Additionally, certain ISPs are reporting being quoted hefty prices for access into exchanges which have been enabled using public money. We think this is because Exchange Activate 'type' 30 port or similar DSLAMs have been used instead of DSLAMS which can cope with the potential capacity in the area that exchange serves. (BT - would you care to offer an insight into this situation please?)

All of this information needs to be looked at by those with the resources and the interest to make the most of such information. We believe this is relevant to ALL stakeholders, and will help ABC on the long road to achieve its aims for a true broadband Britain.

Previously, information such as this has been recorded by private companies who have not made the data publicly available. This does not just include BT, but also WISPs who have been logging demand in certain areas to establish the viability of building a network. That is fine, but unless we develop a true picture of the national problem of notspots, solutions are unlikely to be sought which offer best spend of public or private money, joined up thinking, and best practice.

We would encourage BT publicly to make available information about all those who they are still unable to connect; all those who may not be financially viable for BT to connect; all those who have line problems that are being shelved until 21CN etc. Perhaps an open letter to the press from ABC might do the trick?

We intend to map the data gained through the survey and make it available to ALL stakeholders on a creative commons licence.

We have done this because it needs to be done and no-one else has sought to take the initative and produce this vital information.

We would appreciate donations and sponsorship to support the campaign. The Donate button is at the top left hand side of every page, and sponsorship discussions can be held with lindseyatabcampaign.org

Add your data today please.

Still No Broadband!

Posted by colinrichards at 10 December 2005
I've been trying to get Broadband for some years now, although I live inside the M25 circle. This is ridiculous situation, I've tried contacting "Ofcom" "BT" and various ISP's to no avail. It's like a a third world country... infact worse! I understand that in South Korea they achieve broadband speeds of up to 100 Mbps. A classic case of BT's non-investment in the future!
